Faith and Beliefs

What we believe.

The Charismatic Episcopal Church holds the faith of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church — fully sacramental, fully evangelical, and fully charismatic. Three streams, one river, one Lord.
Our Convergence

One river. Three streams.

Psalm 46:4 is our battle cry: “There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God.” The vision of the CEC is to experience and express the fullest measure of the Holy Spirit by embracing all three streams that feed the river.

Sacrament

Sacramental

At the centre of our worship is the Holy Eucharist, where we meet Christ in bread and wine. We celebrate seven sacraments as true encounters with grace, and our worship follows the ancient rhythms of the Church calendar.

Scripture

Evangelical

We hold a high view of Holy Scripture, believing it contains all things necessary for salvation. A personal relationship with Jesus Christ is at the heart of our walk — we proclaim grace through faith and invite all to know Him.

Spirit

Charismatic

We are open to the continued work of the Holy Spirit. Through the baptism of the Holy Spirit, all believers are empowered for ministry. We make space in our worship for the Spirit’s gifts, power, healing, and guidance.
Why Three Streams?

The vision God gave us.

The founding vision of the ICCEC, as set forth in the Preamble to the Canons, is “to make visible the Kingdom of God to the nations of the world; to bring the rich sacramental and liturgical life of the early church to searching evangelicals and charismatics; to carry the power of Pentecost to our brothers and sisters in the historic churches; and finally, to provide a home for all Christians who seek a catholic, evangelical, charismatic church and a foundation for their lives and gifts of ministry.”
This vision is grounded in Psalm 46:4: “There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.” The ICCEC exists as a convergence of the liturgical/sacramental, evangelical, and charismatic tributaries of the Church Universal — the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.
The convergence movement is not unique to the ICCEC. More than a handful of communions have embraced this call to recover the fullness of the Christian faith as lived in the early Church. The ICCEC holds a particular stewardship of this vision: a church governed by bishops in apostolic succession, submitted to the authority of Scripture as interpreted by the continuing witness of the ancient church, and open to the continued working of the Holy Spirit — providing a home for all Christians who seek an expression of faith that is equally sacramental/liturgical, evangelical, and charismatic.
The Seven Sacraments

Encounters with grace.

Christ gave His Church seven sacraments — outward and visible signs of an inward and spiritual grace. Each one is a real meeting with God, not merely a symbol.
Sacrament 1

Holy Baptism

The sacramental entry into the covenant life of Christ’s Church — the gateway to all the other sacraments and the foundation of our life in Christ.
Sacrament 2

Confirmation

The sealing of the Holy Spirit, strengthening the baptized for mature Christian life and ministry within the Church.
Sacrament 3

Reconciliation

The confession of sins and the pronouncement of absolution, restoring the penitent to communion with God and the Church.
Sacrament 4

Holy Unction

The anointing of the sick with oil and prayer for healing, in obedience to the apostolic command of James 5:14.
Sacrament 5

Holy Matrimony

The blessing of a lifelong union between husband and wife, established by God and witnessed by the Church.
Sacrament 6

Holy Orders

The ordination of bishops, priests, and deacons in apostolic succession — the pastoral government of the Church under the authority of Christ.
Sacrament 7

Holy Eucharist

The Sacrament of sacraments. At the centre of every Sunday gathering, we receive the real presence of Christ in bread and wine.
Core Beliefs

What we hold to.

These are the foundations that shape our worship, our teaching, and our common life.

The Holy Scriptures

We hold a high view of the Bible, believing the Old and New Testaments contain all things necessary for salvation. Nothing can be taught as necessary for salvation that is not found in Scripture. The Word of God is alive, trustworthy, and the final authority for our life and faith.

The Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds

We confess the faith of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church as expressed in the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed. These ancient statements ground us in the orthodox Christian confession handed down from the early Church.

Apostolic Succession

Our bishops stand in an unbroken line of succession stretching back to the apostles themselves. This historic episcopate is not a matter of pride but of stewardship — a guardrail that keeps us rooted in the teaching, worship, and order of the early Church.

Consensus Government

We are governed not by political pressure but by spiritual consensus. Bishops, priests, deacons, and laity discern the Lord’s will together in prayer and humility. Decisions are made in council, submitted to Scripture, and led by the Holy Spirit.
Our Story

A new work rooted in ancient faith.

1977 → 1992 → Today

The Chicago Call to the Territory of Asia

The seeds of the convergence movement were planted in 1977, when evangelical leaders signed The Chicago Call — an appeal for Christians to rediscover the historic roots of the faith. In 1992, Pastor Randolph Adler was consecrated as the first bishop of the ICCEC. From those beginnings, the Territory of Asia was established to carry this vision across the Philippine archipelago and the wider Asian continent.
Not a Split — a Gathering

Drawn together by the Spirit

We were not formed from a split or schism. We were drawn together by the Holy Spirit and burdened by a shared vision: to become a unified church flowing from three great streams of Christianity in one living expression of faith. Our clergy and members come from Evangelical, Pentecostal, Charismatic, Anglican, Roman Catholic, and Orthodox backgrounds — united in the fullness of the early Church.
The Catechism

An orderly teaching of the faith.

The ICCEC Catechism

The word “catechism” comes from a Greek word used in the New Testament for teaching the faith in an orderly, systematic way — question and answer, by word of mouth. The ICCEC Catechism sets in order the fundamentals of the faith and our beliefs. It is taught to all Christians, equipping them to follow Christ as Lord and Saviour. We commend it to every member of the Territory for study, formation, and discipleship.
